So you want to do yoga at home. A most excellent choice, grasshopper. You already have your yoga DVD picked out, your TV lined up and a big open space to move around in, so you don't smack your head on the coffee table. The big question is, do you have a yoga mat?
Even if you have a carpet, you really should consider a mat. A good yoga mat can be used for any floor exercise, like Pilates, and protects your carpet while stopping you from slipping and doing a face plant on the floor. They're not that expensive, they're colorful and usually machine washable.
When shopping for a mat, keep these tips in mind:
The mat should be large enough for you to lay on and work out on.
Choose a mat that is thick enough to provide some cushion between you and a hardwood floor.
Look for sweat-absorbency, non-skid material, machine washable material. If you're going to put your mat on the carpet, do not choose a sticky mat.
Choose a mat you can roll up and take with you anywhere. Some have cylindrical bags you can slide your mat in for storage and transporting.
So hit the floor in comfort and buy the right mat for you! Sure beats rug burns and hardwood floor knockouts!
